My 13th great grandfather Sir James Croft

THE CASTLE:

Another great castle of my ancestors was Croft Castle in Herefordshire, England.

From Edward the Confessor to Winston Churchill, the Croft family have been key players and confidantes to England's leaders since 1055.

THE CHURCH:

There is also a church on the property dedicated to "All Angels." It has a clock tower and bell.

"The most interesting feature of the church interior is an impressive monument to Sir Richard Croft (died 1509) and his wife Eleanor." - source

THE MAN:

(Please note the red hair, a common trait of the RH negative bloodline.)

Geni.com describes Sir James Croft:

"Sir James Croft was the son of Richard Croft and Catherine Herbert. He married, firstly, Alice Warncombe, daughter of Richard Warncombe. He married, secondly, Catherine Blount, daughter of Edward Blount. He died on 4 September 1590.

Sir James Croft was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.).1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Herefordshire. He was invested as a Knight in 1547. He held the office of Governor of Haddington in 1549. He held the office of Lord Depute of Ireland in 1551. He held the office of Deputy Constable of the Tower in 1552. On 21 February 1554 he was convicted of high treason and committed to the Tower. On 18 January 1555 he escaped with being bound to good bearing and fined £500. He held the office of a Lord of the Marches in 1557. He held the office of Governor of Berwick in 1560. He held the office of Comptroller of the Household. In 1586 he was one of the Privy Counsellors appointed to try Mary, Queen of Scots. He was Commissioner of the Treaty of Bourbourg in 1588. He lived at Croft Castle, Herefordshire, England."

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Sir James Croft was a Knight of the Shire. I had to look that up because it was a term I wasn't familiar with.

Knight of the Shire was the formal title for a member of parliament representing a county constituency in the British House of Commons, from its origins in the medieval Parliament of England until the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 ended the practice of each county forming a single constituency. Wikipedia
