Day 9

Today we cover Pacific Avenue between 21st and 19th. Are you hungry? In addition to some great retail stores, this section of downtown is packed with delectable food options so make sure you pop by one or more of these while you shop. 

Great Northwest Popcorn

There are some great holiday snacks and stocking stuffers at this place. They have mouth watering desserts, carmel corn, candy by the pound, taffy and ice cream. It's a good thing I didn't bring my wallet with me. My self control would not have been enough!

The Harmon

The Harmon is one of three restaurants by the same owner. The others are The Hub and The Tap Room. These restaurants are known for their signature beers that are brewed right here in Tacoma and their amazing food. I also like these places because they feature live music from time to time and many of my friends have performed there. The Duchess is a huge fan of live music by Tacoma musicians.

Bleach
I learned today that this store was opened by John Crouch as a local outlet for Imperial Motion brand, a Tacoma-based action sports clothing brand founded by Eric Wicken, and Steve and Spencer Goetz.  They have skateboards, clothing, shoes and other accessories. Urbanxchange

So many cute outfits are rediscovered at UrbanXchange. This place is definitely a hipster hangout and they also buy clothes if they are hip enough to make the grade. If you like upcycled fashion you will have SO much fun creating new looks here. Gift Certificates are available and the owner said that if you tell the cashier that the Duchess of Downtown sent you, they will give you a buy one get on half off special. You're welcome! :)

The back end of the store is a music venue called The Den. Right now they are in transition
and that space will soon be renamed Tahoma Tea & Co. Now they will have tea, brownies
and other special snacks in addition to local music shows. Many of the food offerings will be 100% vegan.

This is actually up the UW staircase and not on Pacific Ave but
their sandwich board is there right by the link crosswalk.

Elon Musk isn't the only one interested in the underground

I've always been fascinated with tunnels. As a young girl I went spelunking on a school field trip through several caves in the Ozark Mountains. I couldn't tell you where exactly but I vividly remember one cave that we had to go down through a small opening down into a huge cavern where we camped inside for the night. It was as big as a football field. Another cave we had to wade through red clay almost knee deep. As an adult I visited Montana and we went into a small narrow cave just tall enough to walk upright and narrow enough to be able to touch both sides of the cave with my hands. Probably to the annoyance of my companions, I couldn't help but to sing as we walked because the sound was so amazing in there. What's in a name? Who are the Jossy's and where did they come from?

I decided to research my Jossy Patriarchal line as far back as I could. I made it all the way back to the 1300s and along the way I learned some things. For one thing my last name has evolved over time. My father spelled his last name Jossy but a few generations back they spelled it Jossi. Go back a few more and it becomes von Jossa. This journey took me from Washington State to Oregon to Switzerland and eventually Germany. I also learned that the "von" represents nobility.  I also noticed that they repeated the same first names a lot. There were a lot of Peter's for example. Peter is a very old name. The people of ancient Greece used it and its said to mean "rock." Of course Peter was also one of the disciples of Jesus which is probably where most people know it from but Peter the disciple was nick-named that by Jesus. He was born with the name Simon and I found that name in my Patriarchal line too.  Simon is also an ancient name. It means " hearkening or
