Wellness Wednesday (August 8th, 2012) Reality check, party of one! Let's get real.

Sorry about the lack of Wellness last Wednesday. I was having a moment. You know how you sometimes just stop and say, "What am I doing?" It was like that. Lots of self reflection. Lots of trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. Stuff like that. Luckily I am surrounded by Goddesses of inspiration and wisdom and got some great advice and support. I highly recommend inviting your best girl friends over for dinner and just saying out loud those loathsome things that you tell yourself but you really don't mean. If you don't have people around you that you can sort that stuff out with without judgement, try the technique in this video that a very smart friend of mine shared with me this week. This is Byron Katie. As my friend put it, "This is radical shit."  I know, right? OK, moving on.  Electra Spa 5209 Pacific Ave., Tacoma, Washington 98408 (253) 431-2039 www.electraspa.com Connect on Facebook Earlier this week I tagged along with a f...

Menu Item Monday (July 30th, 2012) Our locally grown dinner party

This week I wanted to eat cherries with Sherry's. Unfortunately the Sherry's I know are very busy ladies! I wasn't able to coordinate scheduling with most of them but my good friend Shari Hart took time out of her busy schedule and we invited some of our other favorite people to join us for dinner. This time we decided to make our own dinner using only things we bought at the Tacoma Farmers Market. It was great food and great company. Two of my friends live in Sky Terrace Condo's and they have a rooftop gathering space with a couple of BBQ grills, a seating area, a swimming pool and a gorgeous view of downtown Tacoma and the waterfront. They were kind enough to let us use this as the venue for our dinner. Not only that, they also contributed food and helped us cook! It was perfection. Even the weather cooperated and we had a sunny warm dinner with the perfect breeze. It just shows you that sometimes plan B works out even better that plan A. My dinner companions were...

Market on Market (M.O.M.) 1122 Market Street, Tacoma, WA 98402 Connect on Facebook There is a big purple building in the center of downtown Tacoma. Its got a giant mural depicting Alice and Wonderland on one side of it. You've probably seen it. Its on Market street next to the Downtown YMCA. Embellish Multispace Salon and Smooth & Juicey are in that building. This is also the new home of Market On Market, (fondly referred to as MOM). It's a new local place to buy groceries from mostly local sources. When County Councilman Tim Farrell hosted the ART BUS last week he told us that there was once a large community market right there on Market street so this new market is feels like a returning to a simpler time when the origins of food were much closer to home. I like the idea of knowing where my food came from and who made it (and/or grew it). I really like that idea on so many levels. It means I know that the money I spent is going to help someone with their livelihood...

Wellness Wednesday (June 20th, 2012) Down to Earth

Image
In honor of Summer Solstice, this week's wellness is all about connecting to the earth. I know what you're thinking, you work full time, you live in the city and you still have nightmare's about Blair Witch but fear not! Nature is your friend, with benefits! Here is my 5 step plan for getting you and your planet in better alignment:  Step One: Go for a walk. It can be in your own neighborhood or in one of our amazing local parks. There's a list of parks listed alphabetically here: http://www.metroparkstacoma.org/parks-alphabetical/ Take a moment to look at how many there are! There is surely one in your neighborhood.  ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Step Two: Eat food the way nature intended. Go to one of our local farmers markets and get as many of your groceries there as possible. Information about the Downtown, South Tacoma and 6th Ave markets can be found here: http://www.tacomafarmersmarket.com/ and Northenders ca...
