There is a big purple building in the center of downtown Tacoma. Its got a giant mural depicting Alice and Wonderland on one side of it. You've probably seen it. Its on Market street next to the Downtown YMCA. Embellish Multispace Salon and Smooth & Juicey are in that building. This is also the new home of Market On Market, (fondly referred to as MOM). It's a new local place to buy groceries from mostly local sources.
When County Councilman Tim Farrell hosted the
ART BUS last week he told us that there was once a large community market right there on Market street so this new market is feels like a returning to a simpler time when the origins of food were much closer to home. I like the idea of knowing where my food came from and who made it (and/or grew it). I really like that idea on so many levels. It means I know that the money I spent is going to help someone with their livelihood and not line the pockets of some CEO or stuffed shirt Board of Directors. It means very little fossil fuel was used to get it into my hands. It means I know there's no genetic mutation lurking inside it. And beyond all of that it seems to taste better in the same way that a meal tastes when someone who loves you makes it for you. Plus I get a smug sense of doing the right thing. Who says you can't buy that?

This is Adam Martin and Patricia Lecy-Davis of M.O.M. Adam will be running the shop. Patricia owns the building and is helping to put the whole vision together. This is not surprising because if you know her you know she really has a knack for this sort of thing. She's behind Embellish Multispace Salon, Smooth & Juicey and Go Local. She also used to be the President of the Downtown Merchants Group among other things. Whenever she talks, I listen. She's a very smart person. :) |

This is just the beginning. There is much more on its way. Also a little bird told me that some of the vendors will be dropping off food that didn't sell during the Farmers Market so you never know what goodies you might find at Market on Market! I am really looking forward to shopping there!
