Fashion Friday (June 29th, 2012) Fashion Icon Feature: JD Elquist

Today we are starting a fun new angle to the Fashion Friday blog. Every month we will select a local Fashion Icon to go shopping with us and give us fashion tips. This week I had the pleasure of interviewing J Daniel Elquist for my June Fashion Icon feature. JD spent time in New York where he had his own successful Fashion Blog, so it was truly an honor. While at UrbanXchange and Bleach he gave me some tips on summer choices, how to wear certain clothing, and other how-to tips, tailored just for Tacoma.

I couldn't wait to ask JD what he thinks about summer fashion this year and for his opinion about what's in style for men this season. He explained that, as always, shorts are in the line-up but he also showed us some versatile looks that go from day to evening. He said men need to be selective about combinations and he offers some great tips below.  Here are some truly stylish ideas for what to wear this summer. We had him try on some outfits and explain why he made these choices.

JD's advice for men is to wear what fits: meaning your shorts should be above the knees. Baggy clothes have been out of fashion for quite some time. Another thing that is really in is plaid shirts. No, we are not talking about the cowboy large plaid, but instead the tight box plaid. Plaid button-ups seem to be the way to go, because not only do they look classy but you can leave it unbuttoned with a fitted shirt and make it into a more relaxed look.

I don't think we can stress enough that wearing something fitted to your body is very fashion forward and looks a lot better then a small man wearing something three times his size. A simple classic jacket can add more of a dressed up look to your regular clothes, as shown in this picture. Also just by rolling up your sleeves or pants adds dimension to a normal outfit and shows you care about your style.

The classic button-up shirt with a vest in still in for any age man. Its perfect for slacks and shows professionalism. The tan coat and shoes give it the look some dimension as well, and since we live in Washington its always a nice addition.

Last but not least we wanted to give a shout out to colored pants. Colored pants have made a big return to the fashion industry, but if you are daring enough to wear them don't over do it. Wear something casual on top. As seen in the picture, JD went for a gray button up that doesn't over do it and lets the pants be the center of attention.

Next stop was Bleach (right next door to UrbanXchange). JD said he loves this store just because it represents Tacoma so well. From the nautical shirts that describe Tacoma's history, to the brass knuckle icon that represents Tacoma's roughness, Bleach is a great place to shop if you are proud of our city.  Next weeks blog will have a lot more photos of clothing from Bleach so stay tuned or hit the subscribe button that pops out when you hover your mouse over the grey bar to the right of this screen.

I want to give a special thanks to UrbanXchange and Bleach for being awesome and providing the clothes for this month. We had a blast looking through all the great fashion there. If you visit these stores, be sure to let them know the Duchess of Downtown Shopping Blog sent you. They will take extra good care of you.

We give a royal thank you to JD for his time and expertise, he really was the prefect choice for June!

XOXO,
Lady Kashmir
